ONE
Small, soft, pink pads touched the cold stone ground, quivering with anticipation. The young cats pulse rushed, and he could only hear his heart beating in his chest. He hoped his enemy did not hear it too as he crept forward. His body was stiff and only his paws were moving, only barley touching the ground. His tail stuck out strait and his head low. He could feel his strong muscles working as he tired as hard as he could to keep quiet. The cat bit his tongue every time his paws scuffled on the ground until it bled slightly. His ears were erect, hearing every sound around him. His blue eyes were intent on his prey. He felt a cool wind blow in the humid spring morning. The grey cat silently crouched down, his legs shaking from his weight. His tail was only inches off the ground. His paws made no sound as he stalked across the cold ground. When his prey was only a few feet away, he tensed his back legs and pushed of the ground making him leap through the chilly air. The cat landed on the soft tabby fur of his brother, Swift.
“Ouch!” Swift mewled surprised. The silence had been broken and it seemed everything had woken up.
The grey kitten smirked, “I tricked you for the fifth day in a row,” he boasted right as he sat down.
Swift frowned at the remark, “stop showing off, Little Grey!” he grumbled.
“You know it’s true!” Little Grey teased.
Swift jumped to his feet, “I bet I can beat you in battle!” he challenged.
Little Grey growled playfully, “Give it a try.” The grey tom puffed his chest out and laid his ears back on his head. Swift crouched down and leaped high in the air, his long fur blowing like waves. Little Grey dodged to the side, causing Swift to miss but was prepared enough to land on the ground in one piece. He whipped around and charged at Little Grey. Little Grey saw his brother coming and, when Swift was close, he glided into the air and landed on Swift’s back. Swift growled and shook his heavy brother off him. Little Grey puffed when he landed in his head. He looked at Swift. He was now lying down, fur fluffed, and his tail was sweeping across the floor as he prepared for another attack from Little Grey. Little Grey smiled. Swift narrowed his gold brown eyes and slightly turned his head away.
Little Grey noticed his brothers confusion and laughed; “you’ve gotten much better.” He explained.
Swift sat down and, too, smiled “Thanks! I’ve been practicing with Lightning Bolt.” He meowed as he began to wash his black paws. Little Grey watched for a moment, happily thinking of Swift and his brother, Lightning Bolt, the handsome yellow tom, practicing together. These thoughts made Little Grey feel better when he was sad. His mother always said: ‘when you’re upset, just think of the happy times’, so that’s what Little Grey did. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, then stood up and stretched. He breathed in deeply. Little Grey could smell rain coming and noticed the darkening sky. He stood in place, watching the clouds rolled by.
“We better get inside before it pours on us.” he announced.
Swift grumbled, “what ever.” He meowed through a mouth full of fur. Little Grey ignored his brother’s uninterested tone and padded, tail high, toward the Living Cave. Little Grey and his family lived on a mountain. This mountain was covered with deep caves, perfect for almost any animal. These cats lived on one of the many cliffs. The cliff was so high up the mountain, that it snowed most of the year and their only warmth was when the sun came out, which was rare. Little Grey looked again at the sky, hoping the suns rays would shine today. He looked back at his brother and padded toward the den. As he walked by his brother, he licked Swift’s ear. Swift swatted at him in response, his tongue sticking out of his mouth. Little Grey purred and walked on. When he entered the dark cave, he saw his other brother, Lightning Bolt, and his two sisters, Tiny and Diamond, talking together. They were in deep conversation about some story Lightning Bolt must have over heard from their mother, Stormy. Lightning Bolt was leaning forward into Diamond’s pale face and was talking in the most dramatic voice he could make. Little Grey heard a gasp from Tiny. Now Little Grey’s whiskers were twitching with anticipation. He slowly walked to where his siblings were chatting. As he approached, Diamond’s ears twisted toward Little Grey.
Without looking up she gestured with her tail for her brother to come, “Little Grey! Listen to this story Lightning Bolt was telling us about.” She meowed, mouth gaped.
Little Grey proceeded to sit next to his sisters, “what’s it about?” he glanced at Tiny.
“It’s a story about a cat that once lived on the mountain!” she meowed in a dazed voice.
“Humph.” Little Grey shrugged, “Doesn’t sound all the interesting.”
He barely mewed before Lightning Bolt interrupted him, “This cat that lived on the mountain, would climb every single rock, every single day and when he was hungry, he hunted 50 eagles!” Lightning Bolt bragged.
Eagles were a common threat to cats on the mountain, especially the kittens. Their razor sharp talons could kill any creature living in the area. That’s one reason why this story sounded less than truthful.
“Eagles? Are you sure?” Little Grey narrowed his eyes. Lightning Bolt made a huge nod.
“Oh, yes. It’s very true indeed.”
Footsteps sounded behind the young cats, “I highly doubt that.” The cats turned their heads around. Their grey tortoiseshell mother, Stormy, was in the cave entrance with Swift. Swift’s face lit up with happiness. Little Grey, too, felt that surge of happy to see his mother. The kittens did not see her much during the day due to hunting. The hunting conditions are harsh and the weather makes it harder. It also does not help that they have a small territory due to the fact that many other families of cats lived on this mountain. So as soon as her kittens were old enough, she began her day long hunting to keep her family alive. It was rare for her to come home early.
They were also very surprised to see lots of prey. Little Grey stood up and bounced toward his mother. She skidded to a stop in front of the prey.
“Wow! A hare and a hawk!” he gasped. Hawks were rare but easier to catch than most birds on the mountain.
“We’ll be having a feast tonight because I still need to get more! The animals are out of their nests, preparing for winter.” Stormy purred as she hauled the prey into the den.
“Best luck we’ve had in a long time.” Tiny waddled right behind Stormy, trying to get a better look at the hawk.
Swift stepped forward, “I get to gather the rest of the prey with mother.” He held his chin high.
Lightning Bolt slouched behind Little Grey, “I wish I could go.” He looked down at his yellow paws. Stormy padded out of the dark part of the cave with feathers on her mouth and stopped next to Lightning Bolt.
“Don’t worry, you will soon.” She assured her son. She thought for a moment, sniffing the air, and then continued walking toward Swift.
“Come on, Swift. We need to hurry before it rains.” She stepped out of the cave and turned around the corner, Swift trailing after her.
“I think it smells like snow.” He replied.
“It’s too early for snow, my dear.” Stormy’s voice faded. Little Grey listened to the last peep he heard from them then turned around toward the other three.
“What should we do know? Stormy won’t want us out side in the rain.” He whined.
Diamond looked around; trying to get an idea of what to do, “We could…uh…” he paused and watched a beetle crawl across the wall.
“We could play- moss toss!” he looked at Little Grey.
Little Grey sighed, “Don’t you think we are a bit old for that game.” He grumbled.
“Nope” Lightning Bolt said. “How about something more exciting like- cave cats versus loners-“, Lightning Bolt jumped up like a rabbit, “why didn’t you say so! Of course we can play that!” he interrupted. Tiny suddenly burst out laughing. She was rolling around on the ground, almost out of breath.
Lightning Bolt starred at her, “W-what?” he stammered. Tiny continued laughing, while her den mates watched her like she was a maniac.
She finally took in a deep breath, “you should have seen the look on your face when you jumped in the air!” she was still laughing a little.
“Hey, I was just…excited to…play that game.” He growled. “It’s so fun to fight!” he smiled at himself.
Tiny starred at him blankly, “you know, we don’t really need to fight. There’s no point, out here on the mountain. All cats are friendly to each other.” She shrugged.
Lightning Bolt looked at her furiously, “what about when you get onto another cats territory and you don’t know how to fight back! Then you’re in trouble.” He hissed. Little Grey and Diamond watched the cats fight with words; their eyes moving as each one spoke.
“Why would they fight back? All you need to do is apologize.” Tiny was now standing up, her pelt ruffled.
“Apologize? They wouldn’t listen to an apology. They would just attack you on first sight!” Lightning Bolt snapped.
“Who is ‘they’, huh? And have you ever met another cat from the outside? I think not.”
“’They’ are our enemies!”
“We don’t need enemies. Why can’t we all just be friends?”
“Why do you think we have territories? Just for the fun of it? It’s because we don’t GET ALONG!”
Tiny snarled the best she could and Lightning Bolt just starred at her, hackles raised. Tiny did the last thing you would expect her to do; attack. She tackled the other golden cat, and they both tumbled away like a ball of fur. Growls, hissing, and spitting echoed around the cave. Little Grey was sure they could be heard a mile away. Fur began to fly around, and he began to worry. Little Grey knew their skills were amateur, but Lightning Bolt still knew more about fighting than Tiny. He watched as the two cats rolled across the ground, running into walls. At one point, the ball had been broken and the cats just eyed each other.
“Hey guys, you should stop now.” Little Grey suggested. They both ignored him and Tiny sprung again. Diamond watched with extreme worry. She did not like fighting, and never will. Watching her own kin fight was even worse in her mind.
Diamond began to yell at the cats, telling them to stop, “Stop! Please!” diamond wailed. The two did not stop their tussle until a loud screech echoed around the cave. Little Grey turned around nervously, to face his outraged mother. Tiny and Lightning Bolt were lying on the ground, their claws unsheathed, and fur torn, and their eyes widened with fear. Stormy dropped her kill and marched toward the misbehaving kittens.
She stood inches away from their faces, “what do you think you’re doing.” She snarled hideously. Tiny had her small paws up to her chest and was shivering.
“He”- she shot a glance at Lightning Bolt, “-said that we should battle practice because”- Stormy turned her irked face at Lightning Bolt.
“So you think we should fight, hmmm?” she growled deep in her throat.
“Y-no-well…not anymore…” He squeaked. He looked small under his mother’s glare.
“There is no point in fighting. It’s just a complete waste of time, and lives.” She hissed.
Lightning Bolt looked shocked, “but what if a cat trespasses on our”-he started. Stormy did not say a word at his remark, she only stared at him.
“Sowwy.” He grumbled. Stormy whipped around like a bullet and looked at her other kittens.
“Let this be a lesson to you: no fighting.” She looked all three of them in the eye, then gathered up her prey and took it to like darkest side of the den. Swift shook his head then followed with what he was carrying.
As he walked past Tiny and Lightning Bolt, he smirked, “You should have listened to Diamond.” He joked.
“Shut up.” Lightning Bolt spat.
