(HERE YAH GOOO. the writing style suddenly changes at the end LOL)
TWO
Little Grey lay down in the back of the Living Cave. Dark swelled around him as he tried to sleep on his feathery nest. He often sneezed when a feather got in his nose. Every time he breathed out, a feather fluttered to the floor. Little Grey watched, as one by one, the feathers floated in the air until they lightly touched the ground. Thunder sounded, and lightning lit up the sky. Rain was dripping in the cave as it poured down out side. Little Grey watched pleasantly. Every cat around him was sleeping soundly, but Little Grey couldn’t possibly rest. He was thinking about how Stormy acted that day. The way she looked so horrified that her kittens were fighting. And he wondered; was she keeping a secret? It’s not every day that a cat would scold her young for fighting. It was a natural element for kittens. Little Grey frowned as another round of thunder boomed. Did something happen to her in the past? He shook his head doubtfully. ‘I should just sleep.’ He thought to himself. He scooted closer to Stormy for warmth, then after a moment, fell asleep.
* * * * *
When Little Grey awoke the next morning, it was completely silent, an abnormal sound to hear at dawn. He froze, thinking an enemy was near by. He starred wide-eyed around the den. When he looked at the entrance of the cave, his eyes were blinded by light. He rubbed his eyes with his paws. He tried to peer again, but his eyes were still shocked by the brightness. He stiffly stood up and stretched his legs. He stood and watched the den entrance then walked toward it slowly. He was shocked by the icy cold wind that blew in his face, so he backed off. He bounced back to where his family was sleeping. He padded to where Swift was and shook him, trying to make him wake up.
“Hey.” he whispered. Swift pushed him away the rolled over and slept some more. Little Grey huffed impatiently then tried to wake his mother.
Stormy opened her eyes and looked up at him, “w-what? I’m trying to sleep.” She grumbled.
“Something’s not right.” He replied nervously, his paws shifting.
Stormy perked her ears and listened very carefully. She mumbled something to herself then grunted as she hauled herself up. She shook her paws then hesitantly padded to where the den entrance was. Stormy’s nervousness worried Little Grey, so he slowly stalked behind her.
Lightning Bolt blinked his eyes open behind them, “what’s going on?” he yawned, still lying on the ground. Stormy shushed him, and Lightning Bolt’s eyes widened, knowing something was wrong.
Stormy slowed down when she got closer to the entrance, her tail lashing. Stormy stopped walking and squinted at the bright light forming outside. A howling wind pierced their ear drums, making Little Grey stop to scratch them pitifully.
“It can’t be…” Little Grey could not hear the rest of what his mother said, for the wind picked up again, this time throwing white powder on their faces.
Stormy let out a startled gasp then sped around as fast as a bullet and shook her children awake, “everyone up now.” She rushed them.
Diamond looked up with sleep in her beautiful golden eyes, “what’s going on, momma?” she squeaked.
Stormy looked back at the outside light, “we have to go visit someone.” She struggled to keep her tone calm.
Little Grey stretched his legs, “visit someone- who?” he wondered.
Stormy led the kittens to the gleaming entrance, “a cat with wisdom.” She responded.
Little Grey tilted his head to the side, “where is this cat?” but his mother did not hear him because just at that moment, they walked outside, only to be attacked by the howling wind, barreling against their soft faces. Little Grey heard a squeal behind him.
Stormy was yelling over the storm, “Blizzards on this mountain are odd. It will stop soon but eventually it will start up again.” It sounded like she was talking more to herself.
That is odd, Little Grey thought. He followed through the thickening snow at a slow pace. As he walked, he also noticed how the storm was settling down.
When the snow had calmed down enough, Stormy spoke, “told you. Now we can move faster, so keep up or you might get left behind and lost in the snow.” She advised.
Diamond stiffened, “get lost?” she fretted.
“Don’t worry about it Diamond, if you stay close you won’t. And if you ever do get lost, call as loud as you can, ok?”
Diamond nodded silently. She was walking with her head low, as if she got into trouble. Little Grey watched her for a moment. Her pelt was quivering from cold, her eyes glazed, and she looked as if she had not washed herself for a while. Overall, she looked terrible. Little Grey wondered how he had not noticed the changes in her before.
His face must have looked more appalled then he thought, because Diamond was frowning at him.
“Just because I-ah!” she shrieked as she slipped on a rock, and landed head-first in a huge snow drift. Only her tail was visible in the white cloud.
Her sibling’s laughter broke the silence. Stormy rolled her eyes and jumped gracefully over rocks to where Diamond had fallen. She studied her for a second, then grasped Diamonds tail in her mouth carefully, and tugged. Lightning Bolt laughed even harder when Diamond did not budge. Stormy reluctantly pulled harder, this time pulling the kitten out. When Diamond finally caught fresh air, she gasped, her lungs aching. Little Grey sat motionless as the others kept on.
Suddenly, at lightning speed, Stormy whipped around and glared at the three who were laughing, “This is not some kind of game. The mountain is a dangerous place.” She ended with a sharp glare and continued without question.
“Come on.” Little Grey led his litter mates behind Stormy, barely keeping up. Stormy kept on, not looking back to check on her young, while they slipped and tripped on the rocks and pebbles. Tiny was doing the worst effort. She would slip over other step and was whining and groaning the whole way. She was slowly falling behind and it was not helping the others keep up with their mother.
Little Grey was getting impatient, “Tiny, hurry up! Momma is way ahead of us now!” his ears lay back against his fragile head.
Tiny scoffed, “My paws hurt.” She grumbled.
Stormy stopped, realizing that her kittens were still behind her.
Her voice softened, “don’t worry, you will get used to it eventually.” Her eyes brightened with amusement. Tiny sighed, she had wanted to get carried the way. She was a bit spoiled, being the smallest. Her mother was very careful and watchful off her smallest and when she thought the others got too rowdy, she would get very flustered. Tiny enjoyed her shining light that shone. In fact, she hoped it would help her get a handsome mate of her own. What she did not know, but could easily be seen by another eye, is her selfishness. It was as bright as her personality. Little Grey and the others were an example of the seers of this form of self-confidence. She never thought about what others thought of her, but she went too far with her mother’s advice. Tiny did not think of others at all. Not their feelings, state of mind, and how she might be lowering other cats confidence on them self. Tiny was a bit too truthful.
And she was showing it right now, “uh, Diamond? You mind cleaning yourself up? You’re going to make me- I mean us look bad.” Tiny exclaimed.
Diamond puffed herself up, “why is everyone so afraid of such change! Someday, it might kill us all!” she ran ahead, almost saying the last part to herself.
Little Grey and Tiny exchanged a glance. Tiny’s solemn look contrasted with Little Grey’s concern. He looked away sharply. He was wondering about his sister. She was snappy, but never mean.
“She is probably jealous,” Little Grey heard Tiny’s soft voice in the back ground. Little Grey frowned, but she would never be jealous of anyone. I know her better than that, he thought. He glanced ahead at her again. Was something troubling her? Or was she just going crazy? Little Grey had to find out, either way. He hopped away from his kindle, to join Diamond. Casually, he stepped into pace beside her.
He cleared his throat, “Nice morning, don’t you think?” he meowed in an oddly deep voice.
Diamond hissed quietly at him, “what do you want?” she groaned tiredly.
“Uh-just wondering, what’s up?” he spoke without thinking.
Diamond stared down on him hard.
“Alright you got me…I was just wondering if anything was bothering you.” He almost whined.
Diamond only stared at him, deep in thought. Little Grey only watched back, helplessly.
“Well?” he encouraged.
Diamond’s face began to lose its color and her eyes turned blank. She stopped to a sudden halt like she turned into a statue. It made Little Grey flinch.
“D-Diamond?” he said unsteadily.
Little Grey walked around her and swished his tail into her face, “hello?” he taunted.
A voice boomed from the echoing rocks that made him jump, “We’re here!” Stormy was standing just a large-tree length ahead of them, outside of a cave entrance. Tiny and her crew sped past Little Grey and his looked-to-be-possessed sister. After watching them run past, Little Grey turned back to his ghost companion and noticed she had gained consciousness and was walking away silently. Little Grey raised his eye brow and trailed behind.
Stormy was waiting outside the cave with a huge smile on her face, shooing her kittens inside. Little Grey was the last to get inside, so Stormy was not too far behind him. They were trotting through a long, dark tunnel the seemed to go nowhere until a faint blue light shone ahead of them. The sound of water dripping almost soothed Little Grey’s nerves. No wonder Stormy called this place “special”. When they finally entered the blue light, they then were in a huge room with a beautiful shining pool in the middle of the clearing. The water reminded Little Grey of the moon, the way it sparkled and glowed.
Little Grey cautiously leaned over the pool-“STOP! Get away from the Pool of the Ancestors!” an unfamiliar cat scolded him from across the room. Little Grey stepped back. Had this cat lost its mind? ‘Yes.’ Little Grey laughed in his mind. Stormy frowned at Little Grey and then bowed her head in greeting at the “crazy cat”. Diamond greeted the cat too, but as if they were friends. Little Grey questioned this act too. How many weird things were going to happen with Diamond today? Little Grey thought it over in his head, ‘one: she is dirty which is very unlike her, two: she is mean which is also very unlike her, and three: she knows cats we have never seen before.’ The thoughts buzzed in the young cats mind. He decided to watch her for more craziness. The cat interrupted his hard thinking,
“you really need to watch your kits, Stormy.” Little Greys mind began buzzing again, ‘kits? Who says that?’ he fumed. ‘And that cat has the nerve to boss my mother around!’ his anger sparked.
“Excuse me, young one, but you do not have to think of me that way.” The cat called. All eyes were on Little Grey now.
“I…uh…what?” Little Grey could not make words. ‘Can she read my mind?’ the cat laughed.
Tiny spoke up this time, “actually, yes.” She said with a certain pride. The others eyed her with disbelief. Yes, it’s impossible. But apparently, this psycho cat can! He shook his head helplessly.
The cat snorted, “Anyway, I am Crystal,” she bowed, “I am the healer and teller of the mountain.” She added.
‘Crystal?’ Little Grey thought, ‘reminds me of a waterfall…’ he had never seen one before, but Stormy told stories passed down the family of a beautiful waterfall that ancient cats lived at. Until of course a huge wave of water washed them away. Sad story. It seemed like all the stories Little Grey heard that included a group of cats becoming extinct, all happened in some natural disaster. He didn’t found that weird until now.
“wait, so does that mean you can see the future?” Tiny gasped childishly.
Crystal smiled sweetly, “sometimes…but not unless it’s important…”
She trailed off until you could not hear her.
Her face dropped, until she looked like what Diamond had looked before when she turned to stone. Diamond was shuffling her paws nervously where she was sitting. Does she know what is happening? Little Grey added this odd behavior to his mental list. ‘check’ he thought. He could not take this must insaneness in one day.
“Can we leave soon?” he asked.
Stormy have him a face, “we can’t leave yet. She does this some times, its some kind of faze.” She shrugged.
Little Grey liked how his young mother spoke to them like they were just her friends and not her children. It made him smile every time.
In the corner, Lightning Bolt and Swift were freaking out.
“yeah, I would like to leave now too.” Swift made out.
Crystal came back with a jolt, “We need to leave the mountain.”
