A cool wind blew in the humid spring morning. Little Gray silently crouched down. His paws made no sound as he stalked across the cold rocky ground. When he thought he was close enough, he leaped thru the chilly air. Little Gray landed on the soft tabby fur of his brother, Swift. “Ouch!” Swift mewled surprised. Little Gray smirked, “I tricked you for the fifth day in a row! Ha!” Swift frowned, “stop showing off!” he mumbled. “You know it’s true!” Little Gray mewed. Swift jumped to his feet, “I bet I can beat you in battle!” he challenged. Little Gray playfully growled, “give it a try.” Swift crouched down and leaped high in the air. Little Gray dodged as Swift landed lightly on the ground. He turned around and charged at Little Gray. Little Gray saw his brother coming and when Swift was close enough, he hopped on Swift’s back and bit his ear. Swift growled and shook his heavy brother off him. His tail swept across the floor as he prepared for another attack from Little Gray. Swift watched his brother smile. Little Gray noticed his brother was confused and mewed happily, “you’ve gotten better.” Swift sat down and smiled “I’ve been practicing with Lightning Bolt.” He meowed as he began to wash his black paws. Little Gray stood up and started padding toward the Living Cave. As he walked by his brother, he licked Swift’s ear and walked on. When he entered the cave, he saw his other brother, Lightning Bolt, and his two sisters, Tiny and Diamond. Little Gray slowly walked to his part of the cave where his family slept. His family’s cave was in the far corner in the left side of the Living Cave, the part that got the most sun. “Hey, Little Gray! We’re having your favorite meal for lunch today! Squirrel!” yelled Tiny. “Awesome!” Little Gray purred as he ran toward his brother and sisters. So good! Little Gray thought as he ate. Soon after he had began eating, Swift came back with our mother, Stormy. Her grey and orange tortoiseshell fur glowed in the sunlight. “Mother!” Diamond and Tiny mewed at the same exact time. They dashed to our mom and began to purr, “We’re having squirrel today momma!” squeaked Diamond. “Great!” purred Stormy as she walked to Little Gray. “Your favorite.” She said while she licked Little Gray on his head. Little Gray stopped eating and looked up “Can we play with Sun Rock and Patches?” he asked his mother. “After all of you have eaten.” She answered. “We’ve all eaten momma.” Tiny mewled. “Fine, you can all go play, but be careful. That mean’s you Little Gray, and you too Lightning Bolt.” She meowed sternly. All of the kittens ran to Sun Rock and Patches’ den mewing excitingly. When they arrived, Sun Rock and Patches were sitting in the back of their den, bored. “Hey guys!” yowled Lightning Bolt as he hopped up and down, ready to play. Sun Rock and Patches looked up happily and charged toward their friends. “What’s up? Want to play fight?” Sun Rock asked. As all Little Gray, Diamond, Swift, and Tiny sat with Sun Rock, Little Gray noticed Lightning Bolt and Patches weren’t with them. Where are they? Thought Little Gray. He looked around and saw them sitting together talking, “hey Patches and Lightning Bolt, Want to play with us? We’re going to play Waterfall cats and Outsiders again.” Little Gray Meowed. “Yeah. We’ll be with you in a sec.” Lightning Bolt mewed. All the kittens dashed out of the Living Cave stopped when they got to the big boulder. Soon after they got there, Grey Bird ran out of the Living Cave and stopped next to Tiny and Diamond. “Can I play?” Grey Bird asked in her squeaky voice. After she arrived, her sisters and only brother came with her. They were all younger than 3 months so they did not train with Little Gray’s family and his friends so they did not know Grey Birds family very well, but Diamond and Tiny are best friends with Grey Bird because all of them are small. “Oh, well, hi there! Want to play waterfall cats and outsiders with us?” Tiny asked. “Sure!” answered Grey Bird as she ran towards them. Right behind of Grey Bird was her brother, Sneaky. Little Gray noticed that he was very protective over Grey Bird because she’s youngest in her family and also because she’s smallest. “We have been practicing our fighting because we are becoming Learners today!” Sneaky meowed happily. “Congrats!” Lightning Bolt mewed. “Good job guys!” Little Gray meowed. “Let’s play now!” Swift meowed. “Now we need to pick our teams. Swift, you can be outsider team protector like always, and I will be waterfall teams protector, like usual.” Little Gray explained. “Okay” said Sneaky. “Everyone go to the group you want to go in.” Little Gray said. After everyone got in their groups, they heard their mothers call for them. “We haven’t even started yet.” Grey Bird mewed sadly. “Its ok, we will play tomorrow.” Sneaky said trying to comfort his little sister. When they got back to the Living Cave everyone was waiting for them. The Whisperer, the one who heals cats who are hurt, was about to announce that Little Grays cousins were old enough to be learners.

“Congrats!” patches mewed happily. “Thanks, guys!” Sneaky mewed. The ceremony was over and Sneaky, Whiskers, Grey Bird, Lucky, and Star were learners. Stormy padded over with Misty right next to her. Misty quickly ran over to her kits and licked them all over. “I’m so proud of all of you!” she meowed. Stormy walked over to Little Gray and his siblings. “We need to get to bed” she mewed and began to pad away toward her den. The kittens followed. “Good night!” Diamond mewed as she walked away.

The next morning was cooler than yesterday and the air was filled with mist. Little Gray shivered as a cold breeze blew in the cave. He was one of the only cats up after the long night of hunting. Moon Time is the best time for hunting because the eagles and hawks are not up, but the young cats can’t go out at night due to the owls. Little Gray yawned and stretched his legs. He sat in his nest made of feathers and leaves and thought about what he would be doing today, considering that the air was cool enough that most of the prey would be hiding in their dens to stay warm.
Little Gray sighed and walked to the entrance of the Living Cave and sat down looking at the fields way beyond the Ancient Waterfall Mountain. The sun had just come up and was rising over the horizon. From the top of the waterfall, it looked like the more beautiful than anything Little Gray had ever seen. He sat there feeling the cool breeze blow through his fur. He kept sitting there till the Whisperer, Crystal, padded toward him and sat down next to him. Crystal sighed and looked over to Little Gray with troubled eyes. Little Gray looked at her confused. “Bad times are ahead of us...” she whispered. “What do you mean?” Little Gray asked. Crystal looked over to him, but she seemed to be some where else, “a meaningless battle will be fought. Those who were friends will become enemies, and deaths that should never become...but one, can stop it...” Little Gray looked at her shocked, his mouth wide open, but before he could reply, she stalked away like nothing happened. Little Gray looked at his paws and thought about what he had just heard; a meaningless battle will be fought. Those who were friends will become enemies, and deaths that should never become...but one, can stop it..? He thought. He shook his head and padded back into the cave to where his family was sleeping. Now that the sun had risen, cats were beginning to wake up. When he had got to his nest, all of his family was awake. “Hey, Little Gray” yawned Diamond, “where have you been?” she asked with a tired look in her eyes. “Just watching the sun come up” he mewed, not mentioning what Crystal had just told him. “Ok” Diamond meowed, not questioning him. Stormy stood up and stretched.
“What a cold morning...too bad it just going to get colder...” she sighed. Little Gray nodded. All the cats turned around to look at the cave entrance. The night patrol had returned but by the sound of their scared mews, something was wrong. Crystal dashed toward the group of cats, “what’s wrong? Where’s the leader she asked fearfully. Mouse, the cat in lead of the patrol, spoke first, “we did what we were supposed to do, go get the new leader, but...w-when we got there...” he trailed off and stepped out of the way. All the cats gasped in fear when they saw, Night, carrying the body of their leader. Crystal opened her mouth gasped, “how did this happen?!” she screeched with fear. The cats gathered around with shocked mews rippling through the air. “We found him like this...we think it was a cougar...” Mouse mewed sadly. Little Gray looked at the leaders dead body in fear. “WE HAVE NO LEADER!” screeched Corrine in fear, and backed away. The fur on Crystal’s back stood up, but she said nothing. “What are we going to do?” Misty mewed. He looked at Misty, his cousin’s mother, and thought the same thing. “The only thing we can do is fight. I mean, like, whoever is strongest becomes leader.” Everyone looked at each other with thought. Little Gray knew that voice; it was Lion, a learner who thought he was better than everyone else, and was mean to the other learners. Soon cats started agreeing. Crystal looked at Little Gray, and then he understood. By seeing the determination in Crystal’s eyes, he knew what she meant. When she said that an meaningless battle would be fought, she was right. Soon a battle over leader would begin and there was no stopping it. Little Gray glanced back at Crystal to show he understood and looked at the ground. “No...” he heard Diamond whisper. He looked up at her. He knew she did not like fighting as much as the other cats, but hearing the desperation in her mew, he knew she knew something as well. He lifted his head and looked at her sadly, “a meaningless battle will be fought. Those who were friends will become enemies, and deaths that should never become...but one, can stop it...” Diamond whispered as she looked up at her brother. Little Gray stood up and sat closely to Diamond so their fur was touching. He looked around at all the cats; they all looked ready to fight and were glaring at each other. He looked for his cousins. They were sitting across the cave; Sneaky was standing in front of his little sister, Gray Bird, ready to protect her. Gray Bird sighed, they were about to begin the most dangerous thing that could happen to all cats at the same time, and he knew that if it was not stopped soon, cats would die.

Little Gray followed his mother out of the cave, the battle would soon start. Right behind them, Misty, Corrine, and their kittens followed. Crystal was ahead of Stormy and was walking with her head down. All the cats were going out side to begin the battle, but the youngest cats were going toward the waterfall were it was safer. Little Gray could not help feeling relieved to leave the other cats. They were already growling and hissing at each other, ready to fight. Crystal stopped at the edge of the waterfall, “remember, be careful when fighting around the waterfall, you might slip” she warned and padded away. The young cats sat with all the other learners and kittens, all of them had fear in their eyes, except for Lion, because he has been waiting for a chance to become leader. The mothers were standing in front of all the learners and kittens, ready to protect them if any cats came too close. The fur on Corrine’s spine was standing up; she was one of the best fighters in the tribe and the strongest mother. Stormy flicked the end of her tail to tell the learners to stand up, the battle was about to begin. They sat and waited until finally, they heard screeching down toward the living cave. All the cats stood up, and as if she could not wait, Corrine took off to get into battle. Little Gray looked around to see if any cats were getting closer when a huge mass of fur jumped onto his back. He screeched in surprise and fell onto his back to crush his enemy. The claws that were gripping on his back released and Little Gray jumped up to face his attacker. It was none other than the ginger cat, Lion. His eyes were burning into Little Grays grey pelt and he jumped at him again. This time Little Gray was ready and jumped out of the way. Lion glared at him with pure hatred and snarled. Little Gray growled and prepared to attack. Little Gray leaped thru the air with his strong back legs and jumped on Lion’s broad shoulders. The ginger cat screeched in pain and Little Gray bit hard into his enemies’ ear. Lion tried to shake him off but Little Gray had a firm grip until Sun Rock pushed Little Gray off. Little Gray hit the ground with a thud and stared at Sun Rock with shock. I thought we were friends... he thought and then remembered the prophecy, friends would become enemies. How will they all survive?
